A man with a pending DUI conviction is facing fresh charges for what would be his sixth intoxicated driving offense within the past decade after drinking and getting behind the wheel and taking a trip to McDonald's in Virginia.
Members of the Stafford County Sheriff's Office were not "lovin' it.'
Shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Friday night, Woodbridge resident Robert Sanders was apprehended following a strange scene that played out at the traffic light in the area of Garrisonville ROad and Eustace Road.
According to the sheriff's office, a deputy spotted a Nissan at the light, at which point, Sanders got out of the vehicle, walked around it, and got into the passenger's side, prompting further investigation.
While sitting in the backseat - with no driver - a member of the sheriff's office approached him, at which point he claimed that he was a passenger.
A lie he quickly amended.
Sanders admitted to being the driver because he was "really, really hungry" and required some Mickey D's.
He had to settle for jail food.
Sanders would admit to consuming an IPA before getting behind the wheel, and he was arrested after failing multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
He was just getting started.
Once advised that he was being apprehended, Sanders literally ran out of his slippers in an attempt to flee on foot, though he did not make it far before being chased down.
"Sanders advised that he wasn't 'really trying' to run, but merely 'testing the water,'" according to a spokesperson for the sheriff's office.
Further investigation found that Sanders had four previous DUI convictions in Prince William County, with a fifth one pending.
Sanders was charged with:
- Driving under the influence sixth offense within ten years;
- Felony driving while revoked;
- Driving after forfeiture of his license
- Obstruction of justice, refusal, and stopping on a highway.
He's being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
